Team 9's First Meeting Milestone: Genin Team Meeting

Irada Natsume

Natsume leaned casually against the ruined stone of what was once a ruined building in Sunagakure's most frequented training grounds on the outskirts of the village, her large hat pulled down low over her eyes as she calmly awaited her team of genins. Also she was sleeping. That was probably important. This being the first time she'd ever taken on a team as a sensei (very much against her will) meant that she had little to no idea of what she was doing. Coupled with her general slacker mentality, it meant that Natsume had waited until the last possible minute to stay up all night, cramming on important information such as what she was supposed to be teaching as well as her stundents and their general performance and specialties.

Now the time had finally come... and yeah... she was still pretty clueless. She'd think something up once she was awake. Something epically creative. Something... like letting her just get five more minutes of sleep before they arrived to disturb her. Wait... that wasn't it...

Yuri Barako

Yuri breathed in deeply as she approached the old ruins on the outskirts of Suna. It was difficult to miss, as it was the only thing in the general vicinity that wasn't sand and rocks. Then again, she supposed that the ruins were technically made of stone, as well... Before she arrived, she made sure that her eye patch was fitted firmly over her left eye--it hid her secret weapon, which she had obtained two years ago after the accident that took her eye: an implanted Byakugan that her father had acquired for her.

She didn't like to reveal that she had it; it gave her the advantage of surprise that way. Her peers always underestimated her when they thought that she only had one eye, but little did they know she could see far more than they could. That had made her time at the academy quite easy, no to mention satisfying, but now that time was done. She was a genin now, and things were serious. Today, she would meet her team, which hopefully wouldn't annoy her. As long as they took this as serious as she was, they wouldn't have any problems.

As she approached the old building, she spotted what could only be her sensei leaning up against a wall. She walked right up in front of her and stood straight at attention. "Yuri Barako, reporting for Team Nine's first meeting. It's an honor to meet you, sensei." When she recevied no response, Yuri frowned slightly, then gave the woman a closer look--her eyes... appeared to be closed. "Sensei...?"

Was she... asleep?

Hyuuga Kouta

Kouta entered the training ground shortly behind Yuri, a scarf pulled up over most of his face. After a few years in Suna he was used to the wind and sand they usually got inside the village proper, but in the outskirts, especially with the ruins around to create a wind funnel, the constant sandblasting was definitely irritating. As he approached the pair, he brought a hand up to lift the fabric away from his mouth to take a short drink from one of the couple bottles hanging at his side, then pulled it back into position. "She asleep?"

Nishio Satetsu

Making his move minutes after the others were settled in by their 'sensei', Nishio came strolling into the training grounds with a pair of kunai spinning around his fingers. He was late, but he wasn't woried about it. His ego nixed the necessity of showing up on time. Aglow with overconfidence, Nishio's clothing was simple and hardly designed to resist the enviroment, but it covered enough to keep the sun off him and loose enough to keep the heat from overwhelming him.

Cutting the spin of his kunai short, the genin came in alongside the other two and didn't miss a beat. While one was caught up with her futile introduction, and the other made the obvious observation, Nishio made a move. "I guess we'll find out." He chimed in, whipping up his right and firing off one of the two kunai in his hand directly at the Jounin's hat.

Irada Natsume

As the kunai was loosed from its owner's grasp, an extremely observant person may have noticed the briefest and faintest of twitches from one of Natsume's pinkies. The article of clothing in danger of being skewered would choose that exact moment to begin sliding further down Natsume's head.

Rather than being pierced and ruined, the hat would instead move all the faster just as the point reached the cloth. Rather than actually doing any damage, the point would be directed downward as Natsume both caught her falling hat and gently kicked the kunai in a high arc back in the direction it had come.

"Whoever doesn't catch that fails instantly and will be sent back to the academy..." Natsume mumbled groggily, rubbing her eye with one hand as she replaced her hat with the other.

Yuri Barako

Well that had been unexpected. Apparently, their sensei hadn't been asleep at all, but rather feigning sleep. Perhaps it was a way to test them? Either way, when the kunai was kicked high into the air, she wasted no time in retrieving it. She highly doubted that their sensei would fail any of them for something as ridiculous as not catching a kunai, but it was better safe than sorry.

Jumping high into the air, Yuri flipped up and caught the handle of the kunai, then landed gracefully back on the sand. When she was done, she turned back to the jounin and have a dutiful bow. "A pleasure to meet you, Sensei. Yuri Barako, reporting."

Hyuuga Kouta

That had been an impressive recovery. When the third student had arrived, throwing his kunai, Kouta had considered a few emotions and then settled on amusement, a Jounin should be able to deal with that, and she had.

At her words however, Kouta straightened up a little, his eyes moving to following the kunai ins its path through the air. The girl had already jumped, and he could see she was faster than him, so he didn't have much choice now. Their teacher probably wouldn't actually send them to the academy, though that wouldn't be too terrible, he'd just graduate again and not have to worry about a teacher riding his ass for a few years. Deciding to have some fun with it, he through a kunai of his own to knock the first one off track before the girl could get to it and see where things went from there.

Nishio Satetsu

"I like the way you think..." Nishio murmured to Kouta, watching him make an attempt at knocking the kunai further off course. Granted, he didn't necessarily want to be smacked back into the Academy, but he had his own doubts about the validity of that threat. His status alone considered, it seemed worse for the village to put able-bodied genin with potential back to square one.

That noted though, he didn't want to go through the hassle if it was true. His parents would be livid, and they were hard enough for the rest of the village while they were in pleasant moods. Letting his eyes steady on the swirling blade, Nishio made a couple steps toward it. If the girl recovered when it was knocked away and still got it, good. If she didn't, he'd have to make use of his own speed and try to fetch it himself.

"Well at least someone's making this a little more interesting," Natsume spoke now with a little enthusiasm as Kouta's kunai knocked the original up and off course enough that it flew just out of Yuri's grasp less than a second before she took hold of it. "Now come on. Get in there and catch it! Don't just resign yourselves to being fuckups your entire life. This is where you take the ushi-oni by the horns and make life your bitch."

Yuri Barako

Apparently, Yuri had been imagining grabbing the kunai, because for some reason it wasn't in her hand anymore like she had thought. She sighed and looked up at the deflected weapon spinning away from her, then ran over to intercept it before it hit the ground. This time, she made sure that she had it.

"There," she said, dangling the kunai from her finger. "That grabbing enough horns for you? Or do I need to go for the balls next?"

Hyuuga Kouta

At the Jounin's words, Kouta ran forward towards the spot he was estimating the Kunai would come down towards. The other boy hadn't started yet, and the girl was still midair when he started, he could totally get this! However, he came skidding to a hault next to Yuri, a moment after she got it. Damn! He half turned towards Natsume as Yuri addressed her, then, with a casual movement brought his hand over and plucked the hanging kunai off her finger and jumped away. "Got it!"

Nishio Satetsu	Nishio snatched the kunai from Kouta, and did a tuck and roll. Swapped them around, and acted like a douche. I went to Edit so I could copypasta my code...ended up changing the post. =\|

"Bravo! That's more like it! Show some guts and get the job done!" Natsume cheered happily now while clapping, encouraging what was likely soon going to turn into an all out brawl if this kept up. "The game isn't over until the kunai touches the ground, but if it does then you all lose!"

Despite Nishio's little trick, Natsume was well aware of which kunai was the one in play and which was the decoy. Her kick had connected a puppetry chakra string to the weapon so she could keep track of it the entire time... also so she could retrieve it easily in case there was any seriously foul play.

Yuri Barako

"Uhhh," Yuri uttered, as her teammate decided to take the kunai from her. What kind of stupidity was that? She had clearly already retrieved it. How was that supposed to- wait, what? "Hold on, the game isn't over until it touches the ground, but if it does, we all... wait, so there's no way to win?" Yuri rubbed the bridge of her nose and groaned. Was their sensei just fucking with them now or was she trying to turn this into some kind of melee?

"Okay, I already got the thing, now this is just getting silly. Are we going to start with introductions and then do some actual training, or are we going to keep chasing around a kunai like a bunch of idiots?" Really, they weren't even questioning it. Just chase the dancing kunai.

Hyuuga Kouta

Kouta had to admit that the girl had a point, but... This was kind of fun. Besides, he had more important things at hand, or rather, not in hand, as the kunai was plucked from his own fingers just before he could get a firm grasp on it. He had enough presence of mind to stick his foot out however to try and trip up Nishio as he ran past. If it worked, or didn't, he'd make a lunge for the set of kunai with one hand, bringing the other up to form a seal and activate his byakugan.

Nishio Satetsu

"Not chasing it around makes you look like an idiot..." Nishio scoffed as he came up to his feet. That trip up might have been a problem for him, but he had already intended to tuck and roll when Kouta put his foot out. His body was ready for impact and quick enough to work with it. So, he came up right and gave a twirl to face his opposition. "Unless whatever got you in the eye took out some of your brain, you should be processing this already. This is training." That said, Nishio's left hand flicked to his back and then his right did the same.

While only Kouta would catch it, he had placed the left kunai into his satchel and drawn up another one. When he finished, he pulled both up, and then threw his left kunai for Yuri and then his right for Kouta. One of them might have had the right one coming for them, and neither of them was likely to drop theirs as it came. Whether he went after the right one or not was open for debate as he dashed toward Kouta- the only one who could have seen him make the swap.

"It's good that someone gets it," Natsume spoke up after Nishio's words in response to Yuri. "Or maybe everyone but the princess. Hyuuga seems to be pretty interested in continuing as well. I mean... if you wanna be boring we can just pack up, order some plain ramen and talk about who we are and who we wanna be in the future, but if you wanna be awesome you let me see just what your capable of and we'll get to introductions later in a fun and interesting way. Now either you putz around and wonder why people invented a game where you hit a ball with a club and then run around a diamond only to end up right where you began or you get your ass up and hit the damn ball! ..."

And there was a long moment of hesitation before she spoke up again. "...Also that fun and interesting introductions thing might be a total lie. I've never really had an intro session that was anything but mind-numbingly boring. Actually, would you guys mind if we just skipped introductions?"

Yuri Barako

"This isn't training, it's ridiculous is what it is," Yuri said, narrowing her gaze. "In what situation is knowing how to play hot potato with a kunai going to help us? This is almost as bad as chasing a chicken around a field to increase your speed. Sure, it's unorthodox and it might have an effect, but it's still stupid and there are still a thousand better ways to accomplish it."

She stared blankly at Natsume's analogy for several moments before sighing and rubbing the bridge of her nose. She had no idea what her sensei was talking about. After the long pause, however, she lifted an eyebrow and gave an unbelieving look. "Wait, what? You can't just...skip introductions. As much as I don't care to actually know any of you on a personal level, we still need to know about each other to form a cohesive team...how are we supposed to do that of we don't even know each other's names?"

Hyuuga Kouta

"Sounds good to me, though she's right at least that we should know each other's names. I'm Kouta." With his 360 degree vision now active, Kouta had a much better grasp on the battlefield than before, and it looked like the girl wasn't interested in being a team player at all. Still, the thrown kunai was heading right at her, and she hadn't reacted at all! He was just able to follow the swap, but his byakugan had picked up on the chakra string, which he guy couldn't have known about, giving the real one away.

"Look out!" He yelled out a warning to the girl, then snatched the kunai thrown towards him out of the air, and leaped backwards away from the charging Nishio, making a swipe with the kunai towards the weapon pouch if he continued towards him, and called over towards the girl again, "If you decide to join us, he put the real one in his pouch!"

Mood: Ha!

Nishio Satetsu

"Speed. Strength. Stamina. Following objects of importance. Staying within the parameters of a mission. I don't give two shits if you understand it or not, leave the mewling to kittens and keep it out of being a shinobi!" Nishio snapped, closing in on Kouta just as he took a swing with the kunai. Speed on speed, Nishio moved his palm in to connect with Kouta's forearm. Unfortunately, his satchel was still cut loose. Now the force applied to Kouta's forearm was intended to throw all of his momentum away from Nishio. As this was done, Nishio's other hand moved to his back and caught the satchel before it fell.

Hearing Kouta call for Yuri, and noticing the obvious change of eye in his foremost opponent, Nishio found himself a challenge. He knew the other boy would be able to follow his movements with his Byakugan, and expected his other opponent to close in if she stopped being a prude. Finally, this was exciting. He didn't care what their sensei was planning with this, and he certainly didn't want to sit around and think about it. He was a ninja to exert his power, to defeat opponents and obtain strength above all strength. He didn't need an explanation...he needed to fight!

"See?" Natsume spoke up quickly. "Kouta's got the right idea. Move and introduce at the same time. Multitasking for the win! I'm Natsume, your instructor, and you don't have to participate, but if you're not holding that kunai you're going to fail all the same. Feel free to do whatever's more effective than my training in the mean time. Maybe it'll help you back in the academy, right? I mean, obviously doing everything by yourself will do you more good than facing living, thinking opponents on the same skill level as yourself. Who am I, really? Just your sensei, yeah? That obviously doesn't mean anything at all. I couldn't possibly know what I'm talking about."

Yuri Barako

Yuri leaned out of the way of the kunai thrown at her and then shot Nishio a glare. "Are you trying to be an asshole, or are you just naturally gifted at it?" she said, practically growling out her words. She hadn't known this kid for five minutes and already he was on her last nerve. That was rather impressive, actually.

Looking back at Natsume, she folded her arms and frowned. "You keep threatening to send me back to the academy, but that would put you a man short on your squad, and there aren't anymore genin you can just magic up to replace me. And even if you did, I was at the top of my class, so it's not like I'd have trouble getting placed on another team." Hopefully with a more conventional sensei.

"You couldn't have planned this exercise, either," she added. "Since it only happened because idiot number one over there threw a kunai at you. So, what were you going to have us do before that, huh? There must be a dozen more efficient training exercises we could do."

Mood: Beyond Annoyed

Hyuuga Kouta

"Kouta rolled his eyes, though this made no actual difference, visibly or optically, as the girl continued to protest, as well as ignored his warning about the kunai headed right for her. He could think of several obvious reasons to continue the activity, though most of them had to do with the team, and it didn't look like she was going to be on it much longer.

The boys shove connected with Kouta's arm, that coupled with his momentum sending him turning backwards away from him. He attempt to turn it into a spinning kick, using the force to pivot on one foot and try to kick the satchel out of his hand, though he had some doubts about this actually working. If he managed to knock the bag away, he'd try and get his balance back and dart after it, otherwise he'd simply leap a few feet backwards to try and get into a better position for another attempt. Either way, he'd follow it up with, "Whats your name anyway?"

Nishio Satetsu

"Gifted. Definitely gifted. Not to say you're doing anything to keep me from being one!" Nishio chimed in, pulling his satchel out of the way of Kouta's kick as it came for him. He took a few choppy steps away to distance himself and then set his composure. Fresh kunai drawn with his left hand, the boy had his eyes focused in on the only enemy he could take seriously now.

"She's seriously still going, isn't she?" Immediately, he slid out of his stance and pulled a middle finger up for Yuri with his kunai equipped hand. "If you weren't Idiot Number One and Only, you'd have thought out your standard first-time training session. Toss something up, make it seem vague, and try to make the entire team realize they have to hold it together! Team effort keeps a mission--" He waved his satchel around with his other hand. "From falling apart."

"She didn't need to -plan- it, she's obviously not as dumb as you so she worked with the situation....." Nishio shifted his stance again, taking up the winning kunai from his bag and wielding it in his right hand now. "Here's the thing though- You've been pretty boring, so I'm not letting you take this easy win with me as a team." He nodded to Kouta, spinning his kunai and bending at the knees. "My name is Nishio Satetsu, and I'll give this guy over here the choice to side with me and take it up as a duo to keep you from passing, or show some compassion for a weak link and join you to face me so we can hold it as a full party."

A dangerous grin split Nishio's lips now. He was nothing short of vicious if he had realized their true objective, but was willing to throw it away if Yuri was obstinate enough not to play along. To him, the combat was actually the most fun part of it. He'd bond better that way, than talking about their feelings and what they should do about this kunai bit. He wanted to know he wasn't paired off with weaklings and while Kouta was easing into his favor, he wasn't so sure about Yuri. "Clock is ticking. If you don't get your ass in gear and actually do something soon, I'm throwing this kunai into the dirt myself. I'll go back through the academy if I have to. I'd rather sit with kids and learn the proper way to hold a kunai again than stay five seconds longer on a team with someone who only seems to -talk-."

Natsume looked entirely unphased at Yuri's attempt at reasoning, only blinking once out of need rather than any sort of disbelief or realization.

"This wouldn't be the first time a team has had to go a member short after someone died or chickened out. Setsu-chan and I were on a two person team for the longest time. And on that note, if you continue to test my authority and gloat about your own skill without actually showing me anything worthwhile, then I'll make sure your stubborn, superior attitude is banned from being a ninja forever by the kage herself. Possibly your children as well until we can breed out the weakness. I encourage independent thought and action, but my regimen also requires teamwork and participation. You're not a pretty and unique snowflake better than everyone else. You're part of a team that's better with you, but more than capable without you. Take it or leave it."
