Rakdos's Training From Hell

Hanyou Rakdos

Rakdos sat near a lake surrounded by trees. He and his team have left the restaurant, deciding that training should be best done in private. While Rakdos didn't say it out loud, it was heavily implied he didn't want any other shinobi knowing what the team was working on and how they were doing. Now that they were here, Rakdos didn't see any reason to hesitate. "The two Hanyou siblings need to work on their more basic chakra control," Rakdos said as he eyes the brother and sister. "I want you to climb those trees all the way to the top flawlessly. I will not allow you to move on until you've mastered it,"

Rakdos glanced over to Hiroki next. "Ever walked on water before?"

Hiroki Senju

Hiroki shook his head. "I've heard of Shinobi walking on water before. It's not too far of a stretch to realize that it's just an extension of walking on vertical surfaces. Is it?" Many shinobi were said to walk on water, and be able to keep themselves afloat even when the water tumultuous.

Hiroki moved to the shore of the water and concentrated placing a foot down on the water, it seemed to take for a second before breaking the surface when Hiroki put weight on it.

Of course it wouldn't be as simply as applying the same techniques as walking on a vertical or inverted surface. But Hiroki had to start somewhere.

Kohaku Hanyou Ryou

The basics of the task they had been assigned were pretty simple. Grab a kunai, run up a tree, mark where you stop, and keep going until you reach the top. Kohaku did a little bit of stretching next to a pair of trees, after placing his weapons on a stump near the siblings. The two had decided that Kohaku would tackle the left tree, while Shinobu would take on the right.

Kohaku placed his left leg back, bent forward, and waited for a few seconds. He took deep, slow breathes, steadying his himself as he attempted to move chakra to the bottom of his feet. Control my breathing. Limit the chakra pushed to my feet. Constant flow. Finally, he let out one last deep breathe and pushed off his back foot and ran at the tree. He lifted his right foot and made contact with the trunk of the tree, and stuck, followed by his left foot. After three more steps, he slipped, scratched the tree with a kunai, and then landed on his back.

"Ow, sonuva bitch. I let myself get to overconfident and slipped...."

Shinobu Hanyou Ryou

One of the things that helped the siblings, was their competitive nature toward one another. Neither wanted to fall too far behind in anything that was obtainable for both. However, Kohaku was always slightly behind his sister, who grasped techniques and ideas slightly faster. She looked on from next her tree as her brother prepped for his task. He was to go first, then she would equal or surpass his attempt. He then ran at the tree with a burst of speed, went five steps, and fell on his back.

Shinobu chuckled, "Is that all?" She held a confident smile. Kohaku muttered something that she could not hear, but assumed was something along the lines of, "Let's see you do something better then..." She pulled her white hair, with a very soft shade of light pink, back into a pony tail, and performed her own set of small stretches. She then turned to the tree, as her brother watched from the stump. She let chakra flow to the base of her feet and then ran at the tree. She worked her way up the tree, reaching the tenth step before marking the spot and pushing off and falling gracefully back to the ground.

"That was just a warmup," she said triumphantly to her sibling.

Hanyou Rakdos

Rakdos decided that in the interest of fairness, he'd create two shadow clones and have one stick with each group. One would stick with Hiroki, while the other stayed with the Hanyou siblings. Rakdos himself would sit back and observe, taking in everything so that he could create his own opinions separate from the clones. He moved and sat atop a rock, pulling the spear off of his back and slowly sharpening it. He didn't even look at the spear, his eyes trained only on the genin and their training.

The clone watched Hiroki as he seemed to struggle with the water. "Water is one of the hardest materials for a shinobi to walk on. Unlike a tree or earth its constantly changing and flowing, and your chakra must do the same to match it. Experiment with your flow, try to use your chakra in ways you never have before...that's the only way new techniques are discovered," he reminded the genin.

The second clone watched the siblings, admiring their attempt with a simple nod. "I've seen plenty of worse starts than that. You two are on the right path and only need to refine the chakra. Remember, while walking on a surface takes rather little chakra, you have to remember that you lose chakra as you move. Because of this you constantly need to add more to your feet AS you move. Now...try again."

Hiroki Senju

Hiroki was starting to get the hang of when the water would collapse and give way under his foot for a quick splash. He wasn't struggling so much as he was learning in baby steps, he wasn't going to jump in head first and play with the idea, he was going to crawl his way into learning everything he needed to do it right, then practice only the most basic elements from there, which would lead to a very efficient technique.

"Here I'd figured walking on air was that much harder." Hiroki shot back at Rakdos, he'd heard of flying techniques before, but not someone merely standing upon air. That would be a real trick and this was really just a stepping stone to that end. Just as Rakdos was a stepping stone to Hiroki's own goals.

Raising his foot to the surface Hiroki set it down upon the water again, and pressed with his foot, watching the water tense under his foot, and dip as he pressed against the surface tension. Then the young Senju let off and watched the surface of the water closely.

Hiroki repeated the drill. Outwardly it may have looked as though he was doing the same thing over and over again, pressing his foot down to the water so that it was just short of breaking the surface before letting up, but really, Hiroki was doing as Rakdos had hinted and was minutely changing how his chakra was deployed, how it was channeled, the amount used, each little thing working with the others, changing how much his feet could really take each time working on pressing until he felt the surface of the water start to give before pulling his foot back and staring over again. If he got a strong initial step, his dispersion of chakra changing to both push against the surface of the water, and at the same time pull itself down against the surface of the water to hold the boy fast to the surface.

The logic behind it all, was if he could learn to step on water, then he could learn to balance and walk on water that much faster.

Kohaku Hanyou Ryou

A constant flow of chakra. A constant flow of chakra. A constant flow of chakra... He repeated this line in his head as he rested on the stump, almost meditatively. The tree he had been working on had six new slices up along the sides, all within centimeters of the next. His progress had been slow, but nothing had come of it to this point. He heard his instructors words, but he was having trouble controlling the chakra and the amount he had expelled left him tired.

He took a deep breath and stood up. Opening his eyes, he imagined a thin tube channeling chakra to the soles of his feet. Once they reached the base of his feet, his muscles relaxed and he charged the tree. Five. Seven. Ten. Thirteen. Kohaku slashed at the tree as he lost his footing and fell the ground, catching himself last second to avoid hurting himself. He stood up triumphant, and looked to his sister. However, the only thing that he saw was a confidence breaker.

Shinobu Hanyou Ryou

Shinobu had already known what the instructor had told her, however she was simply pacing herself as not to crush her brother's confidence at the beginning. For his six tries, she only had two, reaching two-thirds of the way up the tree. However, she grew tired of using up her chakra, and as her brother meditated, she ran up the tree swiftly, reaching the top with ease. She then moved her way back down to the tallest branch and sat down, kicking her legs freely and patiently. Once her brother had finished his best climb yet, he had looked to her tree and found her at the top. His shoulders slumped as she gave a victorious smile.

Hanyou Rakdos

"Sarcasm never helped anyone become a stronger shinobi any faster Hiroki. Focus," Rakdos said as he just continued to stand and watch the boy struggle. Hiroki had the right idea, but it was not an easy thing ot pull off. Water was so fragile, and something as simple as the wind moving could cause the need for chakra flow to change again. Sustained battles on water weren't good for anyone, it's why Kiri shinobi were particularly feared. They were masters of an element that was so chaotic as it was.

"You're thinking too much. This needs to be something that you feel. Until it becomes natural to you it's going to be useless in the middle of a battlefield."

The second clone watched the progress of the siblings with curiosity. The girl seemed to have better chakra control while the boy still struggled. The clone motioned to the lake. "Shinobu, go and join Hiroki and learn to walk on water. As for you Kohaku....again."

Hiroki Senju

Hiroki pushed against the water and stood atop it, for merely a moment as his foot seemed to slide across the surface, causing him to drop his free foot with a splash that broke the surface causing his experimenting foot to push through, leaving him ankle deep in water. Again.

It would seem that with the experimentation that the boy had seemed to get a hang on managing surface tension of the water. Now he merely needed to find a way to root his foot in place, like it was on the trees. He would have to distribute his chakra in such a way that it did just that. Not simply hold the water up but hold his foot against the water as well.

Hiroki went back to experimenting. This time pulling his foot slightly away from the water, playing the surface tension to hold against his foot as he pulled it away. He continued to experiment with the water pulling his foot away as if trying to secure the water to his foot, not simply pull his foot back and free of the water, but trying as if to raise his foot up with the water, and hold himself to it. It would be a two-part technique, unlike walking up a tree, a one-part technique.

He seemed to be making slow and sure progress watching the way the water pulled at his foot as he slowly pulled it away.
