Stats

All characters have certain statistics to represent their various skills as a ninja. It should be noted that stats are merely a guide for your character's effectiveness when it comes to RPing, not a be all to end all. However, they do also have more rigid functions, such as determining what rank jutsus you can use. All characters receive a certain number of points to spend on Stats, and receive more as they rank up.

There are five separate stats that these points can be allocated into:

Stamina- Determines your character's physical energy reserves, as well as their chakra capactiy. Having more Stamina will allow your character to last longer in battle.

Strength- Determines how strong you character is. The more strength you have, the more damage your physical attacks can do, and you can lift heavier objects (for example, wielding massive zabatos).

Speed- Determines how fast your character is. The greater your speed, the faster you can move and react to attacks.

Intelligence- Determines how smart your character is. The greater your intelligence, the easier time you will have coming up with plans on the battlefield, as well as your effectiveness with Genjutsu.

Chakra Control- Determines your mastery of your chakra. Higher Chakra Control means you can learn greater levels of ninjutsu.

Each shinobi rank has a different amount of stats to be distributed amongst these stats:

Genin: 10
Chuunin: 20
Jounin: 30
Kage/Kounin: 40

When a character achieves their next rank, they are given that next rank's stat total. So a Genin becoming a Chuunin would receive an additional 10 stat points to distribute, for a total of 20.

Any one stat can have a total of as little as 0 (though it should be noted that having 0 in a stat makes it completely and utterly useless) and as high as 10, which is the hard cap on individual stats.

Jutsus

There are three main types of jutsus, or skills, that shinobi can learn. They are ninjutsu, taijutsu, and genjutsu. Use the provided links for comprehensive lists for each type and sub type of canon jutsus.

Ninjutsu : A term referring to almost any technique which allows the user to do something that they otherwise would be incapable of doing, including the usage of weapons. Unlike genjutsu, which makes the opponent see illusions, the effects of ninjutsu are real. They vary greatly in purpose, with the simpler ninjutsu serving such tasks as transforming the user or allowing them to evade attacks. These techniques are often second-nature for experienced shinobi, who can use them at will. More complex ninjutsu manipulate one's surroundings or utilise the elements, respectively serving such tasks as healing others or manipulating nature transformations.

Ninjutsu, most of the time, relies on chakra and hand seals to be effective. The hands are put in sequential positions that moulds and manipulates chakra in the necessary manner to perform a technique. This is not always needed, however, and some techniques become second nature to experienced ninja, after which they can perform them at will.

Fuuinjutsu (sealing): http://leafninja.com/fuuinjutsu.php

Taijutsu: A basic form of techniques that refers to any techniques involving the martial arts or the optimization of natural human abilities. Taijutsu is executed by directly accessing the user's physical and mental energies, relying on the stamina and strength gained through training. It typically does not require chakra, though chakra may be used to enhance its techniques. Taijutsu generally requires no hand seals to perform, occasionally making use of certain stances or poses, and are far quicker to use than ninjutsu or genjutsu. Taijutsu is simply put: hand-to-hand combat.

Although it is used by nearly all ninja, some characters use taijutsu almost exclusively and are experts of many taijutsu techniques. Example of taijutsu techniques are Dynamic Entry and Leaf Whirlwind. The Hyƫga clan's Gentle Fist, however, makes extensive use of chakra and demands great skill in its control. Taijutsu techniques are the right choices for those that want to save their time and chakra, or for those who rely on their physical attributes.

Taijutsu: http://leafninja.com/taijutsu-1.php

Genjutsu : Techniques that are employed in the same fashion as ninjutsu, requiring chakra and hand seals. However, the primary difference between the two is that the effects of genjutsu are illusory; instead of attacking the victim's body, like taijutsu or ninjutsu, genjutsu techniques manipulate the flow of chakra in the victim's brain, thus causing a disruption in their senses. This is frequently used to create false images or to cause pain from trauma (because the body is led to believe it is in pain); however, there are plenty of other uses depending on the situation.

They are not used as often as ninjutsu because they don't physically harm the opponent, but several characters have made themselves well-known for their great prowess with genjutsu. Genjutsu can also be used to manipulate others, similar to brainwashing by feeding the victim illusive suggestions, as well as for other supplementary purposes such as interrogating an individual by breaking their will.

What rank jutsus your character can know are determined primarily by your stats. Each type of jutsu (ninjutsu, taijutsu, and genjutsu) has a primary and secondary stat associated with it, as followed:

Ninjutsu: Chakra Control/Stamina
Taijutsu: Speed or Strength/Stamina
Genjutsu: Intelligence/Chakra Control

In order to know a particular rank jutsu of a certain type, you must have a minimum value equal to that jutsu's rank in the corresponding primary stat, as well as the minimum value of one lower rank in the jutsu's secondary stat. These minimum values are as followed:

D: 1
C: 3
B: 5
A: 7
S: 10

So, for example:

An A-rank genjutsu would require a minimum of 7 in Intelligence, and 5 in Chakra Control.
A B-rank ninjutsu would require a minimum of 5 in Chakra Control, and a 3 in Stamina.
An S-rank taijutsu would require a 10 in Speed (if the jutsu is skill based) or a 10 in Strength (if the jutsu is power based) and a 7 in Stamina.

Some jutsus may have slightly different requirements, however. For example, the Hyuuga's Gentle Fist style could require Speed as a primary stat and Chakra Control as a secondary. Something like this would be left up to your judgement, but if you have a question you can simply ask a mod.

Note: Once a rank has been reached in Strength (D-S) any physical attack (even one that isn't a specific move like Leaf Whirlwind) counts as a Taijutsu attack of that rank as far as considering how much damage it would cause, unless intentionally weakened. So, at Strength 10, a simple kick would be an S ranked physical attack.

Elements
Every Ninja is born with an affinity for using one of the base elements in their ninjutsu: Earth, Lightning, Fire, Wind or Water. In order to use an element outside of that, it requires a deal of training, and generally only Jounin and above can use multiple elements. The exception is if someone is born with a bloodline affinity for a combined element, such as Ice (Wind and Water), Wood (Water and Earth) or Lava (Earth and Fire), which allows them to use that element, and the ones that make it up. However, doing this tends to lead the ninja away from developing into other directions, so someone with a Bloodline Ability should specialize in that ability, or not use it at all. Non-Elemental bloodlines also exist, and the same is true there, though without needing to focus on three different elements, those ninja generally have a bit more spread.

Milestones

So how exactly does one earn a new rank on NUL? Well, this requires a character to RP various milestones. These are side RPs that can be done alone or with other people, and can be completed at whatever pace you desire. If you want to take your time, great, and if you want to speed through it to make your genin a jounin as fast as possible, well then more power to you. Each different rank has different milestones, some of which are required and some of which can be chosen or ignored. Some even change depending on if you pick a specialty job when you reach chuunin!

For Genin and Chuunin, a total of 4 milestones are required to complete in order to move on to the next rank, while Jounin require 6 to reach Kounin rank. Milestones that are in bold are required, and the remaining ones can be selected however you wish. When a character reaches Chuunin, a specialty job can be selected, either ANBU, Hunter-nin, Medic-nin, or Academy Teacher. Milestones marked with an * are switched out, depending upon which job you've chosen. The same still applies, in that bold milestones are required, and the remaining ones can be selected from as you desire.

When RPing out a milestone, please label it accordingly as the thread title: [Character Name] Milestone: [Name of milestone]
